Big Bands

Big bands are jazz orchestras that flourished during the swing era, typically featuring a structured arrangement of brass (trumpets, trombones), woodwinds (saxophones, clarinets), and a rhythm section (piano, bass, drums, guitar). Unlike small jazz combos that emphasize improvisation, big bands rely on intricate arrangements while still allowing space for solo performances. They played a significant role in popularizing jazz, especially for dancing, and were led by iconic figures such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman. Though their peak was in the mid-20th century, big bands continue to influence jazz and contemporary music today.
