Full form of PH is Potential of Hydrogen.

pH is referred as quantify acidic or basic nature of chemical to be measured in terms of H+ ions concentration. It is used to measure the alkalinity or acidity of solutions. Acidic solutions are the solutions of H+ ions with higher concentrations and they are measured to have lower pH values than alkaline solutions.

On the pH scale, The PH value ranges between 0 to 14.

The logarithmic and inversely pH scale specifies the hydrogen ions’ concentration in the solution. PH of acids and bases is referred as the negative of the base 10 logarithm of the H+ ion.

Understanding PH values

The PH solution has the value ranges between 0 to 14.

The PH solutions which has the value below 7, it specifies the Acidity.

The PH solutions which has the value above 7, it specifies the Alkalinity.

As the PH value increases, Alkalinity increases.

As the PH value decreases, Acidity increases.

A solution is with 1 PH value will be highly Acidic.

A solution with value PH 14 will be highly Alkaline.

so the neutral value of a solution is of pH of 7.

The Acidity and Alkalinity of a solution is measured at 25oC.

Formula of pH

The formula of pH is as follows:

pH   =   -log [ h3O+]  or  log [H+]

The Importance of pH

The pH is very important in our day to day lives as given below:

The specific range of pH for soil is required for the growth of plants. Because the soils are usually acidic. Many plants can not grow in highly acidic or highly alkaline soil.

Honey-bee injects the acid by its stings which leads pain and irritation. Thus, mild base for example, baking soda is applied to treat the wound.

pH helps in food digestion. In our stomach, hydrochloric acid is produced which helps in food digestion without causing any problem to stomach.

Acids leads to tooth break down. The changing value of pH in mouth can became harmful for tooth break down.

Acid produced in fatigued muscle. During physical exercises, the pain starts in muscle due to the formation of lactic acid. so the oxygen is reduced and this leads to the difficulty in energy producing.
