Full form of NRI is Non-Resident Indian.

NRI is an Indian Citizen who born in India but migrated to another country. There may be some reasons behind migration like, education, work, residence or any other. NRI is also known as expatriate or overseas Indian.

India has the second largest NRIs across the world after China, as per the ministry of overseas Indian Affairs.

Definition: The Indian citizen who stay away from the India for more than 182 days is known as “Non-Resident Indian”. The income tax rates are different from others for such citizens. NRIs will have the Indian passport and acquires the citizenship of India. The U.N.O staff and officials appointed ahead by state or central government, are treated as Non-Resident Indian.

Categories of NRIs

There are three categories of NRIs as below:

Indian citizens who go abroad for working purpose in foreign government agencies like, world bank, United Nations Organizations (UNO), International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Indian citizens who go abroad for staying purpose for vacation, education, employment or to carry business.

State or Central government and public sector officers undertaking working abroard.
