MLA stands for Member of Legislative Assembly.

MLA is elected by voters of constituency to the legislature of the Indian State Government. There may be 4 – 9 MLAs in every state for every MP (Member of Parliament) which has in the Lok Sabha. As per the positions, MLAs have different kinds of roles and responsibilities.

Basic Criteria for MLA

There are some basic criteria to become MLA,

  • The applicant must be Indian Citizen.
  • The applicant must not be less than the age of 25 years.
  • The applicant should not be insolvent or mad.
  • The applicant must be voter of any constituency.

Responsibilities of MLA

MLA represents the people’s objections and ambitions to the state government.

MLA should raise local problems of his constituency with the state government.

MLA should make the proper use of LAD (Local Area Development) budget for developing his constituency.

For the benefits of constituency’s members, MLA should make use of various legislative tools.
