Full form of GPS

GPS stands for Global Positioning System.

What is the full form of GPS?

The full form of GPS is Global Positioning System.

The global positioning system is a satellite based navigation system which used to determine the exact location and maintained by United States.

It is primarily designed to assist military vehicles and now it is accessible for everyone with GPS receiver. It is used to track vehicles and to follow the best route from one place to another by shipping organizations,  courier companies, Airlines and drivers etc. GPS Full Form in Computer is also known as Global Positioning System, which is used to determine the exact location of a device.

Parts of GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS full form) is divided into three different parts:

1. User Segment : It refers to the users and used to process the navigation signals which comes from satellites and used to position and calculate the time.

2. Control Segment : It is referred to stations on earth used to maintain and track the satellites.

3. Space Segments : It is made up of 24 to 36 satellites and basically known as 24 SVs and which 24 satellites divided into 6 orbital planes.

How GPS Technology Works

GPS technology uses the Trilateration technique which is a mathematical technique used to determine the speed, elevation and location. The GPS device can calculate the accurate distance or the range of each satellite being tracked through continuously analyzing and receiving the radio signals from multiple satellites and also applying the geometry of spheres, triangles and circles.

Each satellite takes the circles of earth twice a day and each of satellites send unique signal, time and orbital parameters. The GPS can read the signals from six or more satellites at the given moment.

It creates the circle when the satellite sends a signal, along with the radius measured from the GPS device to satellite.

It creates a second circle when the second satellite added and the location is narrowed down at one of the two points where circles are intersect.

As the device is at the intersection of all these three circles, the location of device can finally be obtained.

That’s why it is said, we are living in a three-dimensional world, means that each satellite produces a sphere, not circle.

Functions of Global Positioning System (Long Form of GPS)

For different types of businesses and organizations, GPS is the powerful and dependable tool. Some of the people who use GPS for the daily purpose are, workers of agriculture and mining, pilots, boat captains, surveyors, scientists etc.

They all make use of GPS for obtaining accurate timings, for preparing proper maps and surveys, for tracking location and positions and for navigation purpose. The GPS works in almost all weather conditions for all the times.

The various functions of GPS are as following:

  • Navigation: To follow the best route from one place to another
  • Tracking: To track the movement of a object or a person
  • Mapping: Used to create world maps
  • Timing: To give accurate timings to the world
  • Location: To determine the exact location
  • Aviation: GPS is used in aviation for navigation, landing, and collision avoidance.
  • Emergency Services: GPS is used in emergency services such as ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars to quickly locate emergency situations.

Working Areas of GPS

There are around 24 satellites in orbit with the period of 12 hours and at a height of 11,300 miles.

Satellites are placed in a way that 4 satellites are above the horizon, from any point on the earth.

Global Positioning System (full form of GPS) first make a connection with 3 to 4 satellites in order to receive the information. Then it broadcast the message with the location of receiver and after that GPS receiver combines the broadcast messages of different satellites to calculate the exact location. which is called as triangulation method.

GPS satellites need an cleared line of sight for the communication. but this technology can’t be used for indoor use. Some devices use public Wi-Fi signals and nearby cell towers. This technology is known as Local Positioning System (LPS).

Conclusion

In today’s world, navigation has become easier thanks to the Global Positioning System, commonly referred to as GPS Full Form. But have you ever wondered What is GPS? Simply put, it’s a network of satellites orbiting the Earth, providing us with accurate location and time information. GPS in Full has numerous applications, from helping us find the best route to our destination to tracking the movement of objects or people. And, with the Full Form of GPS in Computer, we can even create detailed maps and surveys.

The Global Positioning System has truly revolutionized the way we navigate and understand our surroundings. Its impact is evident in various industries, such as aviation, emergency services, and agriculture, where accuracy and timing are crucial. As technology continues to advance, the uses of GPS are expected to expand, making it an even more essential tool in our daily lives.
